When I was a little girl, my grandmother taught me to knit. I made scarves and doll clothes in many colours of the rainbow with Nanny’s leftover yarn. As a child, I dreamed of becoming a ballet dancer, but my mom couldn’t afford dance lessons. I never became a dancer, but many of the characters in my books dance. I took memories of knitting with my grandmother and my dream of dancing, tossed in some magic and came up with a story of Miss Rafferty and her magic rainbow socks.
